Deck The Halls!

2014 Deck The Halls Greens Workshop

All members of the Capitol Hill Garden Club who have paid their 2014-15 dues are cordially invited to attend the 2014 Deck the Halls Workshop. We will provide enough evergreen boughs for a wreath and centerpiece, with some left over, a wreath form and/or oasis for making a centerpiece, and a rich supply of beautiful ribbons and wreath-making pins. Old hands will gladly help first-timers.  There will be demos of wreath and bow making.

If you have your old wreath forms, please bring them to re-use or to share.  We also welcome anything from your garden that you feel is nice enough to use for decorations such as extra magnolia leaves, pinecones, and seedpods.

The party begins with finger food at 6:30 p.m.  The early start allows time to eat before working on the wreaths and arrangements. Those who wish to come only for the supper are welcome to do so – no fee or registration is necessary – just bring food to share.

Registration is important.

As usual the workshop is limited to the first 40 people who sign up. Advance reservation and a $25 contribution toward the cost of the greens are both required no later than November 30.

To register, you may
  1. Click Register on this page and follow the prompts, or
  2. Print and mail the attached form.
Whichever method you choose, you'll need to mail your check for $25 to the Capitol Hill Garden Club c/o Edee H. Hogan, 530 N Street SW #509-S, Washington, D. C. 20024, or you may make your payment at the November meeting.  You may not pay at the party.

Food:  Each member is asked to bring a plate of sweet or savory finger food – enough for 8 -- the Club will provide paper plates, plastic glasses and beverages. We provide no cutlery, so, please, no casseroles!

Optional Soup Kitchen Donations: The Church of the Brethren Nutrition Program serves 20 in warm weather and up to 40 during the cold season and suggests bringing household items and food such as big yellow gloves (size medium) for the dishwasher, steel wool soap pads, detergent, paper towels, tin foil, pinesol; frozen hamburger, hamburger buns, parmesan cheese in shakers or containers, butter, cooking oil, sugar, and flour.

Items you may want to bring:  An apron to protect your clothes from pitch, garden gloves, pruning shears, scissors, pliers, or a Swiss army knife for making a wreath, swag or centerpiece. You will need to bring a watertight container to hold an oasis for a centerpiece. Persons allergic to the greens may wish to bring antihistamine. Remember to label your tools.

Cleanup: We must leave the room as we found it.  All members attending are required to help with the cleanup at the end of the workshop and restore the room for the next day’s activities. Please take folding chairs to the racks, sweep floors and bag all trash. Cleanup must be completed by 9:00 p.m.

Volunteers: Please note that volunteers will be contacted and told the times for bagging the greens and for set-up. If you haven’t already signed up to help and wish to do so, please call Edee Hogan at 202 544-2532, cell: 202 744-5262 or email her at

Registration Form:  You may register to attend here on the website, or you may print out the attached form mail it to the Workshop's Chair.  Click Here to print out your copy of the form.
