14 -  Saturday 10:30 am, Historic Anacostia Garden Walk

Meetup location corner of 17th and U Sts SE (plenty of street parking available)

Join us as we stroll around historic Anacostia with neighborhood residents and admire a sampling of gardens. Walk will end with refreshments at a beautiful garden across the street from Frederick Douglass house, Cedar Hill.

OCTOBER 2024

8 - Tuesday 6:30 pm, Houseplants for the Outdoor Gardener
Northeast Library
Adam Kaplan from ReWild will talk to us about houseplants for the outdoor gardener: plants that can go outside and inside, dealing with pests, differences between potting media and soil, etc.

NOVEMBER 2024

12 -  Tuesday 6:30 pm, The Key to Tree ID
Northeast Library
Is it a sweet gum, white oak or sycamore leaf? At this fun interactive tree identification workshop, Barbara Gowan will teach us how to maneuver through a dichotomous key (fancy name for useful tree ID tool) to identify the type of tree. Participants will use the book,Tree Finder: A Manual for Identification of Trees by their Leaves by May T. Watts, for this hands-on workshop that will leave them with the knowledge and tools for their personal tree discoveries.

DECEMBER  2024

3 - Tuesday Greens Workshop, Members only

Capitol Hill Garden Club's annual wreath or centerpiece making greens workshop! Register in advance for this fun hands on event, space will be limited. Your entry fee includes everything you will need to create your own wreath or centerpiece to take home. Bring a platter of finger food to share and your holiday spirit!

14 -  Tuesday evening,  Women in Horticulture

Women have tended and loved their gardens for millennia but their contributions are largely forgotten.  In this lecture, Jenny Rose Carey takes a small slice of time, 1900 to 1940, and explores the key women who founded gardening organizations including The Pennsylvania School of Horticulture; The Women's National Farm and Garden Association; and The Garden Club of America.  Other women discussed include authors, garden designers, conservationists, and dig-in-dirt gardeners.

FEBRUARY  2025

11 -  Tuesday evening, Beyond Parsley, Sage Rosemary and Thyme: Learn to Grow and Use a dozen unusual culinary herbs

Horticulturist Peggy Riccio will teach us how to grow a dozen unusual culinary herbs. For each herb, discover the best time and method to start, cultural requirements, harvesting and preserving techniques, and methods for using them in the kitchen. These are herbs that can be grown in the DC metro area, but they are not as commonly known as the Mediterranean herbs.

MARCH 2025

11 Tuesday 6:30 pm, Shade Gardening

Northeast Library

Teri Speight, author and renowned gardening expert, will deliver an insightful talk on the art and science of shade gardening, emphasizing the unique challenges and opportunities it presents. She'll highlight the importance of selecting the right plants that thrive in low-light conditions, such as hostas, ferns, and astilbes. Teri will also discuss soil preparation and maintenance, stressing the need for rich, well-draining soil to support healthy plant growth. She'll share creative design tips to make shaded areas vibrant and inviting, using a mix of textures and colors to add visual interest.

APRIL 2025

8 - Tuesday 6:30 pm, Local Migratory Birds
Northeast Library

Jennifer Francois of Chautauqua Institution's Bird Tree and Garden Club will talk to us about our local migratory birds - which ones are coming through, a little about their natural history, and what specifically they will want to find in your garden (or nearby park, etc).

         TBD - ANNUAL MAY GARDEN WALK

Another Capitol Hill Garden Club tradition! Explore a curated sampling of charming Capitol Hill gardens , led by one of our garden club experts. The walk will conclude with an informal reception at an as yet to be determined location.
